Hi, I’m Bruno

Building a strong and effective therapeutic alliance is more important than any modality or approach you will use in therapy. That’s why I aim to create a connection with my clients in an atmosphere of trust, genuineness, empathy, and unconditional positive regard to support clients as they learn to heal, embrace, and thrive.

My Background

I was born and raised in Peru, where, as a child, I spent a lot of time participating in missionary activities. Throughout my time serving the community, I recognized that people struggle with a range of life stressors that impair their ability to function. Once I finished high school, I knew I wanted to pursue a career as a therapist, and I started studying psychology in college in 2001.

After studying psychology in Peru for five years, I moved to the USA, where I had to study further to provide psychotherapeutic services. I received a Bachelor’s from the University of New Mexico in 2009 and a Master’s from Adams State University in 2015. Soon after, I continued advanced training and began my counseling practice while simultaneously working toward a doctorate in clinical psychology (PsyD).

My career has presented its fair share of welcome opportunities and difficult challenges. For years, I juggled the stress of working full-time, pursuing my doctorate, and writing my dissertation. Similarly, I have experienced moments of anxiety, depression, and bereavement in my life, often without support.

Additionally, having worked with Latinx communities throughout Colorado and New Mexico, I understand that the process of adapting to a new language, culture, and set of expectations can sometimes be traumatic. Observing these difficult experiences in people has made me more empathetic, compassionate, and motivated to help those struggling.

I developed meaningful skills for managing these stressors, but I realized that I would have overcome certain challenges more quickly and thoroughly had I received professional guidance. Through this process, I became deeply invested in becoming the most effective therapist possible, offering others some of the essential skills, perspectives, and support I wish I had been given.

My Counseling Approach & Specialties

I specialize in counseling for a wide range of issues, including trauma, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, and stress management. Trauma is a specific focus of mine because I believe it is often at the core of uncomfortable mental health symptoms.

As a trauma-informed clinician, I draw from gentle, effective therapeutic methods when individualizing the treatment process to each client’s unique needs and goals. I have certifications as a clinical trauma and clinical anxiety treatment professional, alongside training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and Motivational Interviewing (MI). I am also certified in the highly effective method of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which is used to change the way that trauma and stress are stored in the brain. (For more information about this approach, visit my EMDR page).

Perseverance and determination are essential for facing obstacles and accomplishing goals. I aim to possess these qualities as a therapist, supporting and guiding my clients as they learn to do the same.

A Little More About Me

When I’m not working, I enjoy exploring the beautiful scenery of the Southwest, hiking with my dogs in the summers, and skiing the Rockies in the winters. Even though I don’t play as much as I would like, soccer has always been a big part of my life, and I make a point to watch leagues from around the world throughout the season. Life’s greatest gift has been my daughter, and I cherish every second we spend together.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed and disrupted by the effects of trauma, stress, anxiety, depression, or grief and loss, therapy is a meaningful first step on your healing journey. For more information about how I can help or to schedule an appointment, contact me. All sessions are conducted online and available to clients throughout New Mexico and Colorado.
