Grief And Loss Therapy
Have You Suffered A Difficult Loss?
Are you mourning the loss of a significant person?
Has it been challenging to accept and adapt to life without your loved one?
Are you looking for support as you navigate intense feelings of grief and sadness?
A significant loss can result in a range of physical, emotional, and cognitive symptoms. Grief often involves feelings of extreme sorrow, anger, guilt, self-reproach, anxiety, loneliness, shock, yearning, and numbness. Cognitive difficulties involving confusion and a lack of motivation can make it difficult to concentrate and remain present. And finally, physical disturbances like changes in sleep and appetite can affect energy levels, especially if substances are being used to numb the pain.
Of course, these symptoms can make daily responsibilities and functioning even more difficult. Work is impacted by an inability to focus, while a lack of energy makes just about everything else difficult to accomplish. Furthermore, relationships with friends and family may be impaired due to isolation, withdrawal, and depression—especially if they are also grieving and handling their emotions differently.
If you have endured a significant loss, you are probably wondering if you will ever escape the cycle of grief. Wanting nothing more than to just see them again, you probably feel overwhelmed by facing the future without your loved one. Yet, as a therapist who specializes in issues of grief and loss, I am here to assure you that hope and relief are possible. Working together in counseling, we can figure out how to adapt to life after loss while still honoring the memory of your loved one.

Grief Is Part Of Being Human
Unlike many mental health issues, grief is inevitable for just about all of us. Loss is a natural yet often devastating aspect of life, reflecting the deep feelings and care we feel for those that we love.
Unfortunately, we sometimes struggle to recognize the impact of loss. The bereavement period at many workplaces is quite short, and there aren’t many effective models for supporting people who are grieving in a meaningful way. In reality, there is no timeline for grief, and for many, loss can have a traumatic impact that might last weeks, months, or years.
Death Is Not The Only Catalyst For Grief
The process of grief is the process of accepting, adapting, and redefining the self. For this reason, death is not always a necessary aspect of grief; going through a divorce, losing a job, or moving to a different place are all situations that can introduce feelings of grief. If issues of trauma, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse are already present, symptoms of grief may be intensified.
Studies show that cultural competence and supportive care are strong factors in healing the wounds of grief on a deep level. Working with a grief counselor or other mental health professional who can help you accept what happened—and even thrive following the loss—can be the key to creating a new normal for your life.
Online Grief Counseling Is Available Through Psychological Wellbeing
A significant component of grief counseling is ensuring that you feel safe and comfortable in your therapy sessions. As a therapist, my job is to create an empathetic, nonjudgmental online atmosphere where we can explore your loss together. After learning more about your presenting concerns and goals for counseling, we will collaborate on a treatment plan that incorporates grief-specific therapeutic models to facilitate healing.
What To Expect
Part of my approach to grief counseling is offering education about how grief impacts the mind and body. With heightened understanding, we can determine if your loss is traumatic, which will help to establish which treatment methods we will use. I can also suggest using a grief support group as needed to strengthen the progress we make together.
From there, I will individualize the counseling process to your unique needs, goals, and symptoms. If the loss was sudden and/or traumatic, I will likely incorporate Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to help calm the nervous system and neutralize painful memories. I may also draw from behavioral approaches—including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)—to help reframe your experience and restructure beliefs like self-critical and blame thinking.
The grief process is unique to each person who experiences it, and there is no “right” way to endure a loss. However, through a combination of consistent therapy sessions, an effective coping toolkit, and a strong support network, you can develop resilience as you learn to honor the past and embrace the future.
Still Unsure If A Grief Counselor Can Help?
Are there benefits to participating in grief counseling online?
Psychotherapy services via telehealth have expanded since the pandemic due to convenience, lowered health risks, and accessibility. Virtual sessions are typically easier to schedule, given the lack of a commute. Moreover, online sessions can be done from a safe, private, and comfortable environment of your choosing.
Is online therapy more effective than in-person grief counseling?
Studies show that sessions done virtually are just as effective as in-person sessions. Additionally, online therapy can be particularly useful for clients who live in rural areas that make it difficult to travel to an office. My grief counseling services are available to clients throughout all of Colorado and New Mexico as long as you have a computer with video conferencing capabilities and a strong internet connection.
Will I ever stop grieving?
Because the grief process is unique to each person, it is difficult to determine when, exactly, you will feel better. However, your emotions are not “bad”—they signal that you are really feeling and working through your grief, which is something that needs to happen sooner or later. For those who stifle their emotions, they are likely to experience intense mental health issues down the line as a result of not processing their trauma.
Grief counseling is an opportunity to bring awareness to your thoughts and feelings, develop resilience, and adapt to a new reality. With this support, I am confident that your symptoms will improve.
