Is Excessive Worry Getting In The Way Of Your Ability To Function?

Are you preoccupied with intrusive fears about the future, worst-case scenarios, or being judged by others?

Alongside anxious thoughts, do you experience physical symptoms of panic and discomfort?

Do you wish you had more control over your thoughts and feelings?

Anxiety can affect every aspect of life, from the way we feel in our bodies to the way we relate to those around us. Whether we are being kept awake at night because of ruminating worries, experiencing physical tension that prevents us from relaxing, or simply unable to stay present in the moment, anxiety symptoms have the potential to negatively impact our quality of life.

For many of us, anxiety comes in the form of fear-based thoughts surrounding our work, health, finances, and relationships. Consistently worried about what the future holds, it often seems impossible to stay present and focused. This can impact our concentration, contributing to an ongoing sense of overwhelm that leaves us feeling paralyzed about how to move forward.

Are You Struggling With Social Anxiety?

The emotional, mental, and physical symptoms of anxiety can be difficult enough as is to manage, but many of us also struggle with social anxiety as our inner worries are externalized and extended to our relationships with others. In these moments, there is a fear of being judged, abandoned, or rejected by those around us, which can cause us to be withdrawn or avoidant. There can also be a sense of performance anxiety when our work or efforts are put on display to be evaluated by others.

What anxiety really boils down to is a loud inner critic that tells us we aren’t good enough, but therapy can change that. Working with an empathetic, experienced therapist in the safe space of anxiety counseling, you can learn strategies for quieting that inner critic so that a voice of positivity and empowerment can shine through.

Anxiety Is One Of The Most Common Mental Health Conditions

All of us will experience moments of anxiety in our lives, whether we are preparing for an exam, going on a first date, or having a new experience that forces us out of our comfort zone. In these cases, anxiety is temporary.

However, as symptoms worsen to the point of impairing our daily functioning and quality of life, it might be time to consider if an anxiety disorder has developed. Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health struggles in this country, with nearly 20 percent of American adults being affected. Some examples of anxiety disorders are panic disorder, phobias, social anxiety, and generalized anxiety disorder, in which common, everyday stressors cause a disproportionate amount of worry, fear, self-judgment, and/or irrational thoughts.

Where Does Anxiety Come From?

There are many reasons why an anxiety disorder might develop. When feelings of stress and overwhelm are chronic, the brain becomes acclimated to living on high alert, making it difficult to relax and escape the cycle of fear. There are also common life transitions—including loss, job-related changes, and changes in health—that can worsen symptoms. Any form of trauma or distress has the capacity to kick the nervous system into overdrive, inviting unwanted anxious thoughts and uncomfortable physical sensations.

Despite being a treatable issue, many people do not know how to ask for help or even how to recognize that their symptoms have spiraled out of control. Yet, there are many ways that anxiety disorders can be resolved through treatment. Working together in therapy, we can reduce the mental, emotional, and physical toll that anxiety has taken on you.

As a therapist, my job is to offer clients a compassionate, nonjudgmental atmosphere where they can explore their anxiety, get to the root of their symptoms, and develop strategies for making their thoughts and feelings more manageable. What To Expect

My goal in therapy for anxiety is to get you to a place where your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors feel more manageable. By learning how to regulate your stress response with the support of a therapist, you can develop the skills needed to focus on the here and now.

The approaches I incorporate into anxiety treatment are effective, client-centered, and trauma-informed. Mindfulness may be incorporated to create awareness. Then, using aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), you can develop strategies for reframing your thoughts and emotions. Motivational Interviewing may be incorporated to help you clarify your most authentic goals. And finally, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can be used to help you heal and reprocess negative past experiences that may be activating your anxiety or fear.

Not only can therapy help you reduce the overall sense of anxiety you feel on a daily basis, but it can also enhance your coping, regulation skills, and confidence. As you learn to let go of the negative inner critic fueling your fears and worries, you will develop a healthier, more positive self-perception that will guide you through life.

Still Unsure If Therapy For Anxiety Is Right For You?

How long will I be in counseling until I see a reduction in my anxiety?

Every client is unique, which means every treatment process is unique. There is no formula for determining how long you will spend in therapy, but the more consistency and trust you bring to the process, the quicker you are likely to see a reduction in symptoms.

Is therapy for anxiety effective even when it is done online?

Treatment via telehealth is just as effective as in-person counseling and in some cases, even more effective than in-person anxiety treatment. Because clients are able to control their environment in online therapy, they typically feel calmer, safer, and more comfortable during sessions. There is also the added benefit of not having to commute.

All of the modalities used in anxiety treatment are safe and effective when done online.
