What Is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a distinctive form of psychotherapy that changes the way trauma and stress are stored in the brain. Using side-to-side eye movements, auditory cues, or finger taps—otherwise known as bilateral stimulation—EMDR works by reprocessing how unpleasant memories are adapted within the brain’s memory network.

EMDR is a safe and clinically effective modality that is available via telehealth and in-person treatment.

EMDR’s History And Clinical Effectiveness

The psychologist Dr. Francine Shapiro discovered the benefit of rapid eye movement therapy when she noticed the way thoughts and feelings shifted based on where she looked. As Shapiro began experimenting and applying this concept with her clients, she witnessed how bilateral stimulation could be used to neutralize and reprocess difficult memories.

Since its development in the 1980s, EMDR has been thoroughly researched and verified as a highly successful treatment for trauma and trauma-related issues. As such, EMDR is an effective intervention for those struggling with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), with many therapists also incorporating this approach into treatment for depression, anxiety, grief and loss, and panic attacks.

How Does EMDR Work?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing changes how we associate with traumatic or distressing memories. When we experience something shocking, sudden, or disturbing, the memory of the experience does not properly integrate into the memory network. This is why symptoms like flashbacks, nightmares, and intrusive thoughts are common among trauma survivors—unlike “normal” memories, traumatic memories remain unprocessed.

EMDR works by processing these memories and adapting them to the memory network. In an EMDR therapy session, a therapist will have the client recall a specific image or “scene” of a memory to focus on. Then, using a light bar, auditory cues, or tapping, the therapist will initiate the process of bilateral stimulation, causing the client’s eyes from side to side. Simultaneously, the therapist will have the client bring their focus between the target memory and a non-consequential practice, like counting or spelling, to slowly neutralize the memory. This pattern is repeated until the memory is no longer triggering.

There is a highly effective protocol involved with EMDR that ensures the client’s safety and comfort throughout the process. An important aspect of building a strong therapeutic alliance is making sure that the client has relevant information about how the EMDR process works and what the steps of treatment are. Furthermore, this approach is not like a regular therapy session; instead of having to go into explicit detail about a difficult or traumatic experience, clients use the gentle process of EMDR therapy to recalibrate the nervous system.

Though EMDR does not erase traumatic memories, it does transform the way that we recall distressing experiences. Instead of feeling upset by disturbing images, thoughts, and physical sensations, EMDR allows us to observe challenging memories with a sense of detachment and control.

What To Expect In EMDR Therapy Through Psychological Wellbeing

I have been working with EMDR since 2017. At the time, EMDR was still considered a relatively new therapy, but I was intrigued by what I heard about this method being faster and more effective in terms of treating trauma. As someone who has always been invested in the healing journey of trauma survivors, I knew I wanted to learn more about how EMDR facilitated healing and recovery.

I use EMDR in online therapy for clients who have experienced traumatic events that impair their functioning, whether they struggle to concentrate, develop anxiety in otherwise “normal” situations, or have a hard time trusting due to a painful past experience. I also find that this method is helpful for those struggling with depression or bereavement as it relates to loss.

By combining a strong therapeutic alliance and mindfulness with a gentle, effective treatment like EMDR can be the key to achieving positive outcomes in therapy. I aim to create a safe and private online counseling environment so that clients feel ready to face, heal, and overcome trauma.
